영원한 말씀

마태복음 6장5절-8절

또 너희는 기도할 때에 외식하는 자와 같이 하지 말라 그들은 사람에게 보이려고 회당과 큰 거리 어귀에 서서 기도하기를 좋아하느니라 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그들은 자기 상을 이미 받았느니라
너는 기도할 때에 네 골방에 들어가 문을 닫고 은밀한 중에 계신 네 아버지께 기도하라 은밀한 중에 보시는 네 아버지께서 갚으시리라
또 기도할 때에 이방인과 같이 중언부언하지 말라 그들은 말을 많이 하여야 들으실 줄 생각하느니라
그러므로 그들을 본받지 말라 구하기 전에 너희에게 있어야 할 것을 하나님 너희 아버지께서 아시느니라

우리가 하나님께 기도를 드릴 때 여러 사람이 모인 곳에서도 할 수가 있지만 불가피한 경우가 아니면 사람들에게 보이기 위한 기도를 하지 말라고 한 말씀이시다. 예수님께서 예를 들어 말씀하신 부류는 명백히 제사장들과 바리새인들이다. 예수님은 앞선 말씀(마태복음 6장1절-4절)에서 구제에 대해 말씀하시고 이제 기도에 대하여 말씀하고 계신다.

우리가 기도를 드리는 대상은 모든 것이 가능하며, 자비가 풍부하시고, 우리의 죄를 사하시는 하나님이시다. 기도는 하나님께 드리는 것이지 여러 사람 앞에서 자신의 경건함을 드러내기 위한 것은 아니다. 기도는 개인적이고 실제적인 하나님과의 관계이다. 하나님을 인정하고 하나님의 은혜를 받으며 하나님을 나의 구세주로 받아들이며, 하나님의  인도하심을 구하는 경건한 행위이다. 그러므로 골방을 찾아가서  하나님을 대면하여 진실하게 드리는 것이 기도의 기본이다.

또한 하나님을 설득하기 위해서 말을 많이 하지 말고 간결하게 적절한 문장을 사용하여 기도하라고 말씀하신다. 하나님께서는 이미 우리의 필요한 바를 아시니 우리가 구하기 전에 알고 계신다. 그렇지만 하나님께서는 우리가 기도드리는 간절한 마음을 원하신다.

NIV  "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."
 
KJB  And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
