영원한 말씀

마태복음 8장5절-13절

예수께서 가버나움에 들어가시니 한 백부장이 나아와 간구하여
이르되 주여 내 하인이 중풍병으로 집에 누워 몹시 괴로워하나이다
이르시되 내가 가서 고쳐 주리라
백부장이 대답하여 이르되 주여 내 집에 들어오심을 나는 감당하지 못하겠사오니 다만 말씀으로만 하옵소서 그러면 내 하인이 낫겠사옵나이다
나도 남의 수하에 있는 사람이요 내 아래에도 군사가 있으니 이더러 가라 하면 가고 저더러 오라 하면 오고 내 종더러 이것을 하라 하면 하나이다
예수께서 들으시고 놀랍게 여겨 따르는 자들에게 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 이스라엘 중 아무에게서도 이만한 믿음을 보지 못하였노라
또 너희에게 이르노니 동 서로부터 많은 사람이 이르러 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱과 함께 천국에 앉으려니와
그 나라의 본 자손들은 바깥 어두운 데 쫓겨나 거기서 울며 이를 갈게 되리라
예수께서 백부장에게 이르시되 가라 네 믿은 대로 될지어다 하시니 그 즉시 하인이 나으니라

여기에 언급된 백부장은 그 당시 갈릴리 지방에 주둔 중인 로마 군인의 지휘관을 말한다. 이같은 사건은 누가복음 7장1절-10절에도 기록되어 있다. 누가복음에서는 예수님께서 백부장의 믿음을 감탄하시고 그의 하인을 말씀으로 낫게 하셨다.
이 백부장은 유대인이 아니고 이방인이었다. 그러나 예수님은 그의 믿음을 매우 놀랍게 여기셨다. 그는 또, 유대인들을 사랑하였고 그의 하인도 끔찍이 사랑하였다. 예수님은 이스라엘 자손 중 이같은 믿음을 가진 자를 발견하지 못하였다고 하신 것이다. 백부장은 이미 예수님이 말씀만으로도 병자를 고칠 수 있다는 확고한 믿음을 가졌던 것이다. 그리고 차마 예수님을 자기 집으로 모시고 자기 하인을 위하여 예수님의 시간을 뺏을 엄두를 낼 수 없었던 것이다. 큰 믿음 외에 자신을 낮출줄 아는 겸손한 마음도 있었다. 이것을 예수님은 '진실로' 감탄하신 것이다. 이 말씀 중에는 믿음을 가지는 것에는 유대인이나 이방인이나 관계가 없음도 암시하고 있다.

또한, 예수님께서는 아주 의미심장한 말씀을 하신다. (사람들이 죽어) 동 서로부터 많은 사람이 이르러 (이방인일지라도 믿음이 깊고 하나님을 알며 그 명령을 실행한 자들이) 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱이 있는 천국에서 함께 거하겠지만 그 나라의 본 자손들은 (그들은 이미 선택되어 천국에 이르는 계명이 충분히 전달되었지만, 그 명령을 실행하지 않은 자들은) 바깥 어두운데 있는 (지옥에서) 울며 이를 갈리라 하신 것이다. 하나님의 나라 천국은 이스라엘 백성 만이 들어갈 것으로 예비되지 않았다고 하신 것이다. 이 얼마나 놀랍고 두려운 일인가!

그리고는 백부장의 믿음 그대로 그의 하인을 낫게 하여 주셨다.
요한복음에서 말씀하신 것처럼 예수님은 빛이시요 말씀이시며, 말씀은 곧 생명이시다. 
     

NIV  When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,', and he goes; and that one, 'Come,', and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,', and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.

KJB  And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and  I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
